MSI receives NIH STTR Phase II award for its tacrolimus-eluting nerve conduit

Microsurgical Innovations (MSI) has received a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase II award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The award supports development of our biodegradable, tacrolimus-eluting nerve guidance conduit for critical-sized peripheral nerve injuries. The Phase II work focuses on three goals: manufacturing the conduit to clinical-grade consistency, testing its effectiveness in preclinical models that better reflect human nerve injuries, and completing biocompatibility and safety testing. These are key steps toward regulatory submissions and clinical studies.

Peripheral nerve injuries can cause lasting disability and chronic pain. When a gap is too long to repair directly, surgeons often have to harvest a healthy nerve from elsewhere in the body. Our conduit is designed to guide the regenerating nerve while delivering tacrolimus right at the injury site.
